For Children

These classes are designed to be fun and instructive at the same time. You will learn how to become strong and powerful by gaining control of yourself by learning the techniques handed down over the centuries from the Samurai. By working with others of all sizes you will learn how to throw or pin an attacker to protect yourself. You will learn how to take a throw or fall and easily bounce back up without getting hurt at all. With Aikido you will learn that an attacker’s size and strength does not matter. As you learn more you will be able to earn colored belts and advance in rank, starting from white, then yellow and going all the way up to black belt!

Since there are two instructors for most classes, the class will often be broken up into age groups more fun and faster learning.

For Parents

Children learn best when they are having fun, yet challenged to learn. Children's classes are fast-paced and consist of focused learning of techniques combined with games that are carefully crafted to contain lessons on how to use their bodies effectively as well as general conditioning. Part of the class will include self-defense techniques appropriate for children. Importantly, your children will NOT learn how to “fight better” or be aggressive to protect themselves, as Aikido is about neutralizing an attack.

In Aikido the most effective and safe learning environment is a cooperative one- students working together to create effective techniques. We will perform public demonstrations and test for promotions but there are no competitive tournaments.

The Japanese culture offers a special opportunity to teach children about respect and responsibility because all students are both junior (to higher ranked students) and senior (to newer students). In the junior role (kohai) your child will learn respect for authority- simultaneously he/she will learn responsible leadership in their role as seniors (sempai).

Most classes will be conducted with two teachers, breaking the class up into different age groups. This will allow your child to have more individualized attention and a safe environment.

Children also learn about protecting themselves from the three variations of bullying- physical, emotional and cyber-bullying.
